Any photographer will tell you golden hour is primo for taking photos. I am NOT going to claim I’m a photographer by any means, just an amateur who likes to take pictures. So after taking in Bath and all its beauty during the daytime, I thought I’d take myself on an early morning photography walk to capture its majesty in “golden hour”.

Now, this didn’t initially go as planned. We were in Bath for a long weekend, on the second day I was not feeling the best, I think I had a bit of a virus or something. I was a little grumpy and unwell, so I thought I’d flag the morning walk idea altogether. My body felt like it needed the rest. So I went to sleep that night in my hostel bunk with no alarm set.

It was the end of March so I could get up at a semi-reasonable time to still get amongst the sunrise. I woke up naturally at 6 (the time I had previously planned and then un-planned to get up for my walk). Feeling slightly better and unable to go back to sleep (mainly because someone was snoring really loudly in our communal hostel room) I decided that the universe wanted me to go on this morning walk.

I set off, tripod and camera ready to see what I could capture.

I’d like to re-iterate that I am not a photographer but a beginner. But I still hope you can enjoy some of the photos I took on that early morning in Bath. I’ve kept the photos in the order they were taken so you can experience the morning as I did, watching the sun rise and light up the city over the course of an hour.

Bath Abbey is a magnificent structure, I love the gothic architecture.

Apart from the lighting, one of the best things about morning (especially Sunday mornings) is you can get photos with absolutely no one in them. We went back two hours after this photo was taken and this square was packed with people. It’s a very popular spot, not only is it directly outside the Bath Abbey but to the right is the entrance to the Roman Baths.

Pulteney Bridge, Bath

Pulteney Bridge is one of four bridges in the world that have shops spanning the entire length. The others being Krämerbrücke in Erfurt, Germany, Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy and Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy. So far, we’re three out of four, I guess we’ll have to go back to Germany some time.

I loved seeing the beautiful sunrise over the city. Sometimes sunrises are better with clouds, the colours can be clearer, brighter and reach further across the sky.

Naturally, the day eventually came and my own personal golden hour photography walk came to an end.

Morning walks are definitely the way to go for lovely, glowy, soft-lit photos. Not only photos but it was a great time to relax and be mindful while walking around a new city.

I hope this inspires you to go out for a walk in the early morning wherever you are, it is definitely worth it.

  1. Great pictures! As the sun is at the low angle during the golden hour it reduces the intensity of direct sunlight n provides stunning images.
    Thanks

Absolutely! It’s such a great time of day not only for the angle of the sun but the lack of people gives so much more space for photos and you can hit up busy spots almost alone 🙂
